The French-Norwegian archaeological mission operating in Ganoub Qasr al-Agouz hill in Bahariya Oasis has uncovered a number of mud-brick buildings and others chiseled out of rock.
The new discovery should give experts insight into the structure of early monastery complexes in the area.
In a statement on Saturday 13/03/2021, Head of the Islamic, Coptic and Jewish Antiquities Sector Osama Talaat explained that the walls of the six-sector adobe buildings, which date back to medieval times (between the 4th and 17th centuries), have some Coptic inscriptions engraved on them.
He noted that the buildings include what remains from three churches and monks' jars.
Meanwhile, the mission head revealed that as many as 19 chambers carved out of rock and a well-preserved church had been uncovered during the 2020 excavation season.
